The fact that online gambling is a big and growing success
in the United States does not seem to conflict with the fact
that it is also illegal in that country, as a host of entrepreneurs
and businesspeople move to start online gambling sites. The
factors involved in this rush to set up online gambling sites
are able to get around the legality issue by basing their
companies overseas in places where online gambling is not
illegal. Yes, it’s true that most of those who play
on their sites live in the United States, and that is where
most of their income is derived, but those who operate the
sites simply claim ignorance when residents of the United
States play at their sites. They argue that they cannot control
who plays on their sites and what country they are from.
Up until now, this little sham has been working just fine.
In fact, because of the tremendous profits available thought
online gambling sites, understandably there are those in
the Unites States itself that have been trying to find a
way to get around the law in order to run an online gambling
business within the United States itself.
A perfect example of one of these companies is Foxwood.
Foxwood is a large casino that is located in Connecticut.
They have been looking for, and then using, a loophole in
the law, in order to set up an online casino. What the casino
has done it to establish an online gambling promotion. Within
the context of this online promotion, players can play slot
machines and cards online without affecting the actual outcome
of the game or slot machine. What is happening is that the
money being wagered by the online players is not actually
being bet at an online casino. Instead, it is being used
by a surrogate, that functions at the Foxwood casino on behalf
of the online player. The Foxwood casino establishment has
been claiming that all this is perfectly legal. They compare
it to a situation that is common, where people will give
money to a friend or to a relative to play for them at a
land based casino. This is not the way that the state of
Connecticut sees it though and it has been pressuring Foxwood
to shut down its site. Although Foxwood has gone along with
this and has c\shut down its site, many believe that it is
only a matter of time until another land based casino comes
up with the same or a similar idea. Let’s face it.
If there is money that can be made, even when it is illegal,
there are those who will always try to find a way to get
around the law.
