More than 1300 were held by law enforcement agencies in
Shanghai, China for involvement in Internet gambling. This
was card out as a part of China’s current ongoing efforts
to stop the turned of growing involvement in online gambling.
Included in the raid were private homes as well as net cafes,
nightclubs and other locales believed by Chinese authorities
to be involved in Internet gambling.
This follows an earlier raid on Internet gambling operators
in China which occurred during the month of January, when
six hundred people alleged to be involved in online gambling
were arrested. At that time CNY23m, about 1.5m pounds sterling,
were seized. In addition to this, almost 220 people were
arrested resulting from a series of raids on a concealed
Internet-based gambling company. Chinese officials claim
that the enterprise is based in Taiwan and that it has been
tied to known Chinese criminals for almost a year. Of those
arrested in the most recent raid, two out of the 1300 are
listed on China’s “most-wanted” list and
known to have links to illegal online gambling businesses.
