Representative Jared Polis, yet another Congressman who is a Democratic, has announced his intentions to join the effort to have online gambling legalized in the US. Appearing in an article published in Roll Call News, the congressman says that he clearly supports the recently proposed Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection and Enforcement Act. This is a bill that permits and regulates online gambling within the USA. Representative Polis took the opportunity when interviewed, to place aside arguments being put forth by the far right, those politicians who oppose the liberalization of internet gambling within the United States. He completely rejects their argument that the legalization of online gambling will ultimately bring about what opponents refer to as a major epidemic of compulsive online gambling and lead to the break down of all forms of moral order particularly within the youth culture in the United States.
Congressman Polis makes the point that in other countries that are permitting online gambling, the normal result has not been a widespread obsession with gambling or the over use of online casinos. he points out that the opposite is the case. He says that the case in fact is just the opposite since what occurs is that regulatory systems place controls on online casinos forcing them to actively work to prevent underage playing, money-laundering, addiction and cheating. Rather than working against the interests of citizens, Polis says that the use of regulations in connection to online gambling acts to protect consumers, and to do it more effectively than is the case in America with the UIGEA prohibition. He says that the instituting of regulations acts to protect players from themselves as well as from the few offshore operators who sometimes act a bit less than honestly. Connected with the whole issue of online gambling is the case for freedom of the use of the Internet. There are many old school conservative politicians who have a fear of the internet and the power that it holds for today’s economy and the world of commerce. In a letter, Congressman Polis outlines his position with regard to his support of net neutrality, and states that efforts toward the guarantee of net neutrality will ultimately allow for a free and competitive market allowing for the free flow of internet content and the preservation of a free and open internet. He says that it is the role of the Federal Communications Commission to assure that the internet remains fair and equal for all who participate in it, acting as a level playing field for innovative content, applications, and services. Included among those applications, according to congressman Polis, should be online gambling and those various other entertainment activities that are already enjoyed by a large portion of the world. Polis says that keeping the Internet open is definitely a good idea, to keep it open and free and to regulate online gambling. This way, he believes, it is possible to tax it and to then use that money to benefit others and to keep them healthy and happy.
