New License Regulations Released

It was announced on Monday by a spokesman for the U.K. Gambling Commission that it has established new codes of practice and laid down new conditions under which licenses will be granted to gambling operators.

The Commission will also advise central and local government on issues related to gambling and says it will have significant new legal powers to monitor the industry and to prosecute illegal gambling. The Commission was set up in October 2005 with the task of regulating the gambling industry in the public interest. The regulator said that the new codes and regulations will be summed up in communications on the license conditions and codes which will be to be issued to the industry.

“Britain’s gambling laws are undergoing major reform and from September next year all operators will have to be licensed by the Gambling Commission,” said the Commission’s chairman, Peter Dean. “The Commission will have the power to criminally prosecute operators who fail to maintain standards and will be able to impose unlimited fines on operators that breach their license conditions.”

Dean concluded by stating, “the conditions and codes lay down the rules and regulations which operators must conform to in order to comply with our three licensing objectives of keeping crime out of gambling, ensuring that gambling is fair and open, and protecting children and other vulnerable people.”
