Olivier Lombard, the 23-year-old online poker player, was able to cover the cost of his vacation and still have quite a bit left over this year as a result of his decision to enter the Titan Poker $2.5 Million Guaranteed online poker tournament while he was taking a break from his employment as a French civil engineer.
In spite of the fact that he apparently got off to somewhat of a difficult start, this decision of his ultimately earned him a half a million dollar grand prize. He actually had almost forgotten to play in the qualifying tournament and that was just days before the big event. When he was practically out of time and at the very last moment, he finally remembered to redeem a free token that he had received to the $2.5 million satellite, allowing him to finish in the top five, earning himself a seat in the final tournament.
Taking full advantage of the wonders of the Internet, Lombard managed to win the 14 hour main game, playing against an entry field of as many as 1,596 contestants, and all this while he was still vacationing in Senegal.
When asked about his big win he said that he simply didn't think about what was at stake and that he managed to play as rationally as he could. He also pointed out that he made it a personal goal to change his strategy as often as he possibly could during the game, and linked this to whoever was his opponent and the state of the blinds.
