Bill Frist, the U.S. Senate Majority Leader will stop at nothing to get online gambling banned. So it seems from his latest maneuvers in Congress which include appending anti-online gaming legislation on to totally unrelated proposals just in order to get it on to the Senate floor.
According to a Senate GOP leadership aide, the Tennessee Republican, Bill Frist and his aides have apparently met with other lawmakers and officials in both the House and the Senate to get the anti-online gaming measure attached to a compromise Defense Department authorization bill.
A version of the Internet gambling measure was passed by the house in July, but the extremely busy Senate has taken no action on similar legislation to which there is opposition regarding carve-outs and the burdens it could place on the banking industry. Neither of the defense bills passed by the House and Senate mentions it.
According to aides and lobbyists following the issue, the Frist proposal is still revealing details, but Frist himself is reportedly pushing for an approach that isn't quite as sweeping as the House measure. All those interviewed spoke on condition of anonymity because of ongoing negotiations.
Other supporters of the antigambling lobby include the National Football League and various other sports bodies as well as conservative and antigambling groups. While there are reportedly reservations in some quarters about possible horse racing and lottery exceptions, some banking groups are lobbying against it.
Reportedly eyeing a 2008 presidential bid, Frist recently discussed the online gambling measure in the politically important state of Iowa where he pledged his support for a ban. In a recent speech on the Senate floor he referred to it as “a legislative priority”.
