North Carolinan walks off with $1.5 Million Pay Packet

Mark Newhouse, aged 21, knew it wasn’t going to be an easy task when he started in a field of 540 ambitious and skilled poker players.  But that's exactly what he did. He won through, claimed the $1.5 million grand prize payday and became the World Poker Tour Borgata Poker Open champion.

The final table included Blaise Ingoglia, David Sklansky, Chris McCormack, Chris Bell and Anthony Argila, with Newhouse the chip leader when they sat down. When it came to the heads-up play it was Newhouse against McCormack, with the latter holding the chip advantage and most favored to win.

But as we all know, the game of poker is famously fickle and at times downright volatile. Newhouse fought his way back into contention, doubling up his pot at one point to take over the chip lead, and then wiping his adversary out with a full house.

Second place paid $802,895, and McCormack went home with a very respectable sized consolation prize check.

In addition to his fat $1.5 million cheque, Newhouse also received a $25,000 buy-in to the World Poker Tour Championships and another chance for fame and fortune.

In keeping with the large main prize, huge money payouts were the order of the day at the final table. The 6th placed Blaise Ingoglia took home $261,901!
