According to reports from the French Tennis Federation's web site professional French tennis player has died at age 24 of natural causes.
Montcourt had been previously suspended on Aug. 11 from the ATP World Tour, by the governing body of the men’s tennis tour. He had been charged with betting $192 between June and September 2005, on 36 tennis events. The judgment of an eight weeks ban on his play was given to Paris born Montcourt. It was later reduced last May by two weeks, by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The restriction on play began yesterday.
In addition he was fined $12,000 which he was required to pay. He was presently ranked as 119th in the world. So far this year he had won $81,418, bringing his total earnings since becoming professional to more than $374,000 since 2002. His last match was played in the semifinals of a Challenger Tour clay court event that took place in Rijeka Croatia. As a part of his appeal Montcourt said that he was not aware of any rules governing online gambling.
Regardless, however, the Court of Arbitration for Sport declared that he should have been aware of the rules. Still the court reduced his suspension since he had gambled only small amounts and because he had never bet on his own matches. It was almost one year ago that investigators for the sport of tennis discovered as many as 45 matches during the previous five years in which there was a need to examine them more carefully because of what they called unusual betting patterns. Even though tennis is known to be a sport in which it is possible for players to easily fix the games, for the most part no foul play has been discovered. Today is indeed a sad day for the world of tennis in as much as this young persons skills will never again be witnessed by tennis fans.
