Szerencsejáték, the Hungarian state gaming company may not like foreign Internet competition, but it doesn’t seem to have any problems when it comes to expanding its own online operations.
Gábor Székely, the CEO, has announced the issue of a public tender for the purchase of information technology equipment to facilitate the expansion of his company's online gambling services. He noted that due to long legal procedures, some of the games will take up to 18 months before they are launched on the web. In addition, some of the games, including lotteries, will be barred to foreign residents who do not have a registered address or bank account in Hungary.
The European Commission has requested that Hungary open up its sports betting market to other EU member states in line with the EU principle of free movement of goods and services.
During the past year Hungarian sports fans have gambled an estimated Ft 15 billion online.
