The final playoff in the New Zealand Poker Championship took place at the Christchurch Casino in New Zealand this week. It was the setting for a hard-fought contest with some fine poker skills on display.
A New Zealander and an Australian confronted each other at the final table when Kiwi Richard Grace and his Australian opponent poker pro Eric Assadourian met head to head to finish off the tournament.
After a tough contest Assadourian ran out the winner, and returned home to Oz with the $100,000 main prize, the trophy and a sponsored seat in the 2007 World Series of Poker Main Event.
"I used every bit of my playing experience to win this tournament," said Assadourian after his win. "I was made to work really hard for it. I only had one thing on my mind when I arrived at the final table, and that was to win the tournament. People kept folding around me and I was able to build up a respectable pile of chips." The Wellington, New Zealand resident, Richard Grace picked up $60,000 for his second place.
The operations manager of the Christchurch Casino Poker, Mick Ryan, said the event was a brilliant climax to a week of great poker. "There were people trying to knock each other out right from the start and it was great to see a Kiwi there at the end. But Eric 'The Voice' Assadourian showed throughout the tournament that he is a very shrewd player and knows when to take a risk."
