Even though the compliance with the WTO disputes panel ruling ended over twenty-four hours ago, US representatives at the World Trade Organization have remain silent. This has caused the finance minister for the Caribbean Islands of Antigua and Barbuda to speak out. According to the finance Minister, Errol Cort, depending on the outcomes of US legislation on the issue of online betting, it could become more difficult for the Island's companies to do business with its American clients.
for these reasons, Antigua took the US to the WTO panel, which according agreed with their argument that the prohibition legislation violates global trade rules. America would have to amend its currently policy that permits internet gambling on horse-racing bodies. The deadline for implementation passed earlier last week.
Nevertheless, the US has made no attempt at compliance. According to sources, the US officials have denied every attempt by Antigua and Barbuda to cooperate and work out a reasonable solution. Currenltly, Antigua is exploring the relevant options of forcing the US to comply with the WTO ruling. However, since the small Island's economic and political clout does not match that of the US's, it will be a difficult scenario. Antigua boasts a highly regulated gambling industry. Meanwhile, the US is flaunting the WTO's decision and at the same time is attempting to deal with domestic monopolies on gambling and betting.
