Several Utah media outlets have leaked reports suggesting the Republican Goodlatte will be expecting much opposition to his proposed bill from a surprising source. The bill is a proposal to ban internet gambling should it surface once more, especially after a hearing in the Judiciary Committee sub-committee. Republican and fervent anti-gambling politician, Chris Cannon commented that he would aggressively oppose a bill to ban Internet gambling. He suggested such a bill would be a back door legalization of online wagering in Utah. However, much speculation points to maintaining the horse racing, fantasy sports and lottery.
According to Cannon, he fears that Utah will become bombarded with gambling should it be legalized. He confirmed his strict opposition to gambling.
Aside from Hawaii, Utah is the only other state that completely prohibits gambling of any form. Nevertheless, Rep. Bob Goodlatte, commented that opponents are claiming the bill would give exclusive treatment to horse betting or any other gambling. He indicated that this would be bizarre. Goodlatte, publicly stated that the bill gives no such leeway to the horse racing industry. According to federal law, horse racing is legislated under a different law and is not affected by the proposed bill.
During the last five years, while the versions of the proposed legislations have been debated, online gambling has quadrupled in size. In face, there are over 2, 300 gambling sited and over $12 billion a year wagered online.
Cannon viciously and publicly opposes gambling as a pernicious and abhorrent vice. Nevertheless, he continues to resist opposition to internet gambling and refuses to support any bills without removing references to horse racing language. Additionally, the national center against legalized gambling too opposes horseracing elements.
