Gambling addictions and online gambling should be at the forefront of Ontario's gaming discussion according to York University professor Thomas Klassen, because of the current economic crisis. He points out that up until the present time Canada has failed to do a complete assessment of online gambling in the country. In a new report that has been released by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation it is published that insiders in the available lotteries in Ontario were compromising the system.
According to Professor Klassen, Internet gambling is "the next frontier." He adds that it won't be long before you will be able to purchase lottery tickets online. He adds that the Internet is going to be the place where you will be able to reach a lot of people who might not feel comfortable going to the corner store. Klassen also mentioned that the problem of underage gambling is also an ongoing issue.
He points out that individuals will not soon be putting a stop to their putting down money to give themselves the opportunity to win, and following this report the public may begin to think that there are really some fundamental problems with the gambling system.
For the ordinary lottery ticket purchaser the paper to which Professor Klassen contributed and co-edited - Casino State: Legalized Gambling in Canada, paints a bleak picture. Klassen shows little optimism at all and adds in his statement that it is the corner stores that basically are becoming tax collectors for the government. He adds to this the warning to any time you have people collecting money for other people, there are going to be attempts at scams and there will be those who are going to be trying to take an unfair advantage.
An example is that even with the availability of the latest technology it was not able to stop some insiders from profiting in a big way on the state controlled lotteries. Once online gambling becomes common place both within the homes and through the use of the phones of the online gambling public it is anybody guess as to what it is going to be like. But one thing is for sure and that is that the Canadian Government will be there to study it. Even though rules are set in place there is no way of guaranteeing that dishonest people will follow the rules.
