Americans surfing the internet at work

Cruising the internet at work is a major pastime, according to Florida based Burstek Internet consultants.
The company recently undertook a study of Americans at work.
Their results show that many spend a lot of time surfing the internet. The result: major productivity losses all around.
The 2005 internet usage study examines the results from an internet activity report for over 10,000 employees during the last year (2005).
The report highlighted the activity which mostly threatens the security of major enterprises. The report found three major threats. The first was legal liability, the second security risk and the third loss of productivity.
COO of Burstek, David Smith, commented that the internet has obviously had a major revolutionary effect on global business. There wouldn’t be a company that has not been effected by such a revolution.
The downside of technological developments such as the internet is the dramatic erosion of productivity, let alone the other dangers it imposes to both employers and employees.
For the above reason, the firm is encouraging companies to closely monitor employee internet use.
According to the report, unchecked internet use by employees can be a major threat to "compliance, security and overall production."
The study found several interesting facts. Firstly, that almost eighty percent of all employees studied used the internet at work for their personal use and or entertainment. Additionally, over seventy percent of the personal use represented employee productivity. Furthermore, almost twenty percent of internet used for personal use accessed websites with potential security risks. These risks ranged from a threat to the network to spyware and included file sharing and malicious code. Another major aspect of personal use was represented by sites that presented legal liability risks. These sites include pornography, hacking, gambling and hate speech.

the 2005 internet usage study contains many more additional statistics and analysis. It also categorizes the individual risk and identifies the top sites visited for personal use.
