Poker's first Player of the Year Awards Gala banquet is set to be held next month. The event will take place on the 15th of February and will be located at the Henry Fonda Music Box Theatre in Los Angeles. Card Player Magazine will be hosting the big night. Bodog.com has produced exclusively, and will co-sponsor the awards evening. Hollywood stars and poker superstars will gather for the evening and for the coveted prizes. The awards categories include the 2005 Poker Player of the year as well as several other prizes such as the lifetime achievement award. Brad Garrett, from the television series sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond will be MC'ing the affair.
The industry is excited for the first time event. Finally, according to Barry Shulman, Chairman of Card Player Media, the poker world will have its own awards banquet honoring those within the industry and those who have helped develop it. Accordingly, the awards show is set to startle LA – true Hollywood style. People will finally have the chance to rub shoulders with famous poker superstars. Men 'The Master' Nguyen is predicted to win the 2005 player of the year award. Nguyen has earned close to a million dollars in winnings over sixteen final tables. He is accorded first seed, and the reputation of being a most lethal player. Aside from the Player of the year award, there will be an extra eight prizes awarded. These will be announced on the evening in mid-February. The winners were selected through a series of votes by poker's top players. They voted on categories such as the best cash game, poker's top ambassador, the most entertaining player, the best no-limit player, best heads-up player, mixed game player, most feared player and most underrated player.
Card Player's People's Choice Awards will include prizes for the favorite overall poker player as well as the best celebrity poker player. Voting has taken place over the internet for several weeks already. Card Player's website collated the votes, of which there were thousands, and from there narrowed the list to the final nominees. There are several big names for the favorite poker player category as well as the celebrity player category. Card Player Media has several magazines circulating. They are also owners of CardPlayer.com, a leading internet site on poker information.
