Nova Scotian Law Enforcement Gets Tough on Poker Tournaments

Over 60 illegal Texas Hold em tournaments have been the subject of activities carried out recently by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Nova Scotia. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation has reported that tournaments run in public houses are receiving special attention due to the fact that most are unregulated and unlicensed. Individuals found to be guilty of organizing and running poker tournaments risk criminal prosecution.
The Nova Scotian government's liquor and gambling regulator licenses all legal gambling activity in the state. Private gambling operations in residential areas that operate without a license and gambling in unlicensed public places are illegal. While individuals playing in tournaments will not be charged, companies that allow tournaments to take place on their premises may risk prosecution and the loss of their liquor license.
The crackdown by the RCMP has not been without controversy. Pro-gambling forces point out that singling out Texas Hold em tournaments for special attention is unfair, due to the confusing nature of the legislation surrounding gambling in the province.
