UK intends to hold global gambling summit

The United Kingdom has announced its intention to hold a global summit on online gambling, at some point this year. The intention of the summit will be to establish an international set of standards and guidelines for the industry. The aim is to both promote the industry and to protect those participating within it.

Aside for several islands, Britain has been one of the few countries to legally recognize online gambling. In fact, the Gambling Act that came into practice last year is intended to help the government apply, enforce and regulate the gambling industry. Most importantly its aim is to protect the young and vulnerable.

As Tessa Jowell, Secretary of State for Culture, says, the 2005 Gambling Act will institute tougher protection, however, this is a global issue and needs an international response.
Spokesman for culture, media and sport explained further that the government hopes the conference will bring other governments to the discussion table. The conference will include other experts such as regulatory agencies and legitimate gambling operators.

The British government believes that by applying international controls, they are more likely to inhibit organized crime from penetrating the industry.
Further regulation is required in advertising – in order to maintain the moral standard of the adverts and protect those from threat gambling addictions.
