The simple game of roulette has enjoyed unrivalled popularity
since its introduction into the first casino in Monaco in
1861. Roulette derived its name from France where it was
invented. Meaning ‘small wheel’ roulette’s
origins are mysterious and a number of urban legends about
its invention are told.
Some say that roulette was invented for the first Monte
Carlo casino by Frenchman Francois Blanc. Folk tales suggesting
Blanc sold his soul to discover roulette are supported by
the total sum of numbers on the roulette wheel totalling
666. Other tales credit the roulette wheel to Pascal during
his attempt to make a wheel used for scientific experiments.
Whatever the truth may be, there is no doubt that roulette’s
popularity lies in its simplicity and lucky reputation. From
the first roulette layout in Paris produced in 1765, roulette
via New Orleans became the most popular casino game in casinos
throughout Europe. Today the roulette wheel can be found
in every casino worldwide, ensuring its popularity will live
on to thrill generations for years to come.
